mately 5 minutes from the Zografou area to the
city centre.
The construction of the new line will have
many benefits, for example:
•Many densely populated areas of the city
(Galatsi, Kypseli, Pangrati, Kaissariani, Ilissia,
Zografou, Goudi, Vyronas) will be provided
with transportation services. It is estimated that
this line will be servicing more than 530,000
passengers daily.
•Many important facilities, such as hospitals
(Hospital for Children, “Laiko” Hospital, 401
Military Hospital, 251 Air Force General
Hospital, Ygeia Hospital, Mitera Hospital,
Iatriko Kentro Hospital), universities (National
Technical University of Athens [NTUA] head-
quarters, University of Athens headquarters,
Law School, NTUA Campus, UoA Campus,
School of Dentristry), and the courts area, as
well as regions of increased professional and
commercial activity (city centre, Kifissias
Avenue), the Olympic Stadium facilities etc.
will be provided with transportation services.
•The Metro will be easier to use, through the addi-
tion of 5 transfer stations to Lines 1, 2 and 3.
•Existing metro stations (e.g. Syntagma) will be
decongested.
Piraeus-Athens Airport in 45 minutes
According to the Ministry, from June 2017 citizens
will be able to travel from Piraeus to the Athens
Airport in 45 minutes on the new electrified line,
without having to change trains.
Moreover, the country’s central station, which had
been closed for 11 years, is being refurbished.
Thus, the project of electrifying the entire line to
Piraeus will be completed by June, while work is
still in progress for the line’s submersion along
the Sepolia district, in order to avoid causing dis-
turbance in urban areas.
After the electrification project is completed in
June, passengers will be able to get to the airport
in just 45 minutes.
It should be noted that, because of the need to
transfer to the electrified line at the Acharnes
Railway Centre, passengers could not travel
directly from the Central Station to either the air-
port or Kiato.
In June the passengers’ troubles will be over, as
they will be able to get to the airport in 45 minutes
and to Kiato in 60 minutes.
