Trade with Greece 2017 - page 105

During the Preliminary Design stage, it turned out
that owing to technical considerations these
extensions could not be branches of existing
lines, since this would lead to major construction
and operational deficiencies (interruption of line
operation, complex construction, high cost, fre-
quency of itineraries, etc.).
So, Attiko Metro S.A. proceeded with the design
and organisation of the interconnection of these
extensions and their development as Line 4, a
new autonomous U-shaped line, which shall
include two radial branches (Panepistimio-Galatsi
and Katehaki-Maroussi) and a central axis con-
necting these radial branches through the areas
of Pangrati/Kaissariani, Ano Ilissia, Zografou and
Goudi. Line 4 will connect with existing Lines 1 (at
Maroussi and Perissos Stations), 2 (at
Panepistimio Station) and 3 (at Evangelismos and
Katechaki Stations). The Evangelismos-Pagrati-
Vyronas-Imitos-Ano Ilioupoli branch, essentially a
part of new Line 5, was added to this line, as well
as the Marousi-Lykovrisi and Alsos Veikou-
Perissos extensions.
New Metro Line 4 is 33 km long, and will boast 30
new state-of-the-art stations with automatic dri-
verless trains, platform screen doors, CTBC wire-
less signalling system, advanced energy-saving
technology systems, etc.
The estimated total construction budget stands at
3.3 billion euros. This project is expected to
change the transportations map of Athens, and
significantly improve life in the Attica basin.
The Ministry of Infrastructures, Transport and
Networks, and Attiko Metro S.A., are preparing all
the necessary studies for the construction of new
Athens Metro Line 4 (30 stations – 32 km), the ten-
dering of which will comprise five (5) phases (phas-
es A to E). The announcement concerning the
implementation and tendering –on a priority basis–
of the first section of Line 4 (Alsos Veikou-Goudi),
which includes 14 stations (a budget of 1.2 billion
euros) was made on September 25.
More specifically, the first section of Line 4 (section
“A”) will be 11.7 km long, and will comprise 14
stations (Alsos Veikou - Galatsi - Kypseli -
Dikastiria - L. Alexandras - Exarchia -Akadimia -
Kolonaki - Evangelismos - Kaisariani - Near East -
Ilissia - Zografou - Goudi); its budget is estimated
at 1.2 billion euros.
This section is expected to serve 220,000 passen-
gers on a daily basis and shall reduce the number
of private vehicles on the street by 53,000 per
day. At the same time, CO
2
emissions are expect-
ed to be reduced by 279 tons per day.
It will take approximately 10 minutes to travel
from Alsos Veikou to the city centre, and approxi-
