farming and an environ-
mentally responsible food
industry are key ele-
ments to sustainable
development.
To achieve this, within
our jurisdiction, we are
drafting a new action
plan for the appropriate
use of pesticides, also
being alert to any mis-
conduct that might jeop-
ardize the quality or safety of
our agricultural products. Food
security is, and will always be, of
paramount importance to us.
Consumers demand safe and high-quality foods,
and we should be able to meet those demands.
Green practices in farming and animal husbandry
are not a luxury, but a
sine qua non
for success-
ful, export-oriented agricultural production. Our
intention is crystal clear: “Greece will remain
Europe’s garden”. In this “garden” there is no
place for genetically engineered seeds, illegal or
misused pesticides.
Our goal is to produce pure, authentic foods:
products of Certified Origin,
products of Geographical
Indication,
organic
foods that are grown
and processed under
the strictest EU rules.
Supreme quality olive
oil, wine, feta cheese,
crocus, and Chios
mastiha are just a few
delicacies that give a
small, but intense taste of
Greece. Through the
Promotion Programmes, co-
founded by the EU, our quality
products can reach consumers all over
the world.
It is our duty to reform the agricultural sector and
encourage farmers to invest in quality products,
so as to ensure its survival in these harsh times.
The ongoing reforms aim at revitalizing the rural
lands by awaking the dormant economic forces
that can, and will, transform, not just the image of
our countryside, but also the economic reality of
our country. In this task, there is no room for tar-
diness.
