years, has already recruited 1/3 of the workforce.
The total number of direct and indirect hirings is
estimated at 18,000; recruitment is expected to
be gradually completed, early this summer.
Hirings concern all kinds of personnel and skills,
from managerial to administrative and technical
personnel of all levels, ensuring the uninterrupted
operation of the airports on a 24-hour basis.
Greece’s regional airports include 3 gateways in
the mainland (Thessalonica, Aktion, and Kavala)
and 11 airports in the islands (Chania, Corfu,
Kefallinia, Kos, Mykonos, Mytilene, Rhodes,
Samos, Santorini, Skiathos, and Zakynthos). In
2015, these 14 airports handled more than 23 mil-
lion passengers (a y-o-y increase of 6%). Seventy
three percent of these were international passen-
gers. During the 40-year concession period,
Fraport Greece will be responsible for the opera-
tion, maintenance, and development of 14 Greek
regional airports. According to the agreement, in
the first years, up to 2020, Fraport Greece will
invest almost 330 million euros for the develop-
ment of the airports’ infrastructure. In the follow-
ing years, it will realise further investments for
maintenance and repairs, as well as for increas-
ing the capacity of the airports, based on the
development of passenger traffic. The first wave
of modernisation projects, budgeted at a total of
330 million euros by 2020 (total investment
throughout the concession period will exceed 1
billion euros), is expected to start within the first
quarter of 2017.
All tourist industry players hope that the conces-
sion will help more Greek regions attract visitors
and tourists, and will contribute to the extension
of the tourist season.
