which will also include a readable and conspicu-
ous reference to the geographical origin of the
product, i.e. “made in Canada”. It is also stipulat-
ed that no new producer will be able to use the
feta label, even using the above wording.
In addition, the use of any artistic element that
makes reference to Greece, e.g. the Parthenon,
on any products that are already marketed in
Canada and bear the feta label, shall be prohibit-
ed. Finally, the Canadian Ministry of Commerce
shall be responsible for ensuring the compliance
of any companies found to violate the agreement,
without Greece having to take any legal action.
Actually, the agreement also provides for dou-
bling the quantity of tariff-free cheese exports
from the EU to Canada.
This development is very important, since the
agreement with Canada is expected to be a pilot
for other agreements the EU is about to sign,
such as the agreement with the US.
The deputy minister for Development, Notis
Mitarachi, met with the chairman of the
Committee on International Trade of the
European Parliament (ΙΝΤΑ), Vital Moreira, as
well as the European commissioner for Trade,
Karel de Gucht, presented them with the objec-
tions of the Greek side and asked them to include
in the agreement a provision for the protection of
Greek feta. The meetings will continue until the
final signing of the agreement, which will take
