he dynamism of the primary sector of the
Greek economy, which for many years had
been obscured by petty partisan politics,
emerges in this period of crisis as the engine of
growth, also being, indeed, instrumental to a wide
range of economic activities, starting from a change
of mindsets and perceptions regarding the means
and methods of production and extending to the
use of advanced techniques and know-how in their
promotion and marketing.
This trend, which in other times would sound like
something taken out of a science-fiction story, has
become the dominant model that links traditional,
high-quality agriculture to modern production
methods.
Actually, the assumption of the presidency of the
European Union during the first half of 2014,
presents Greece, as well as the entire network of
stakeholders (producers and enterprises) involved
in Greek agriculture, with an opportunity to promote
the quality features of Greek farming on a global
scale and to realize gains mainly related with the
country’s export orientation and with investment in
the primary sector.
In this context, the Ministry of Rural Development
and Food plays a leading role in the develop-
ments that will be set in motion during the Greek
presidency, and the Ministry’s political leadership
has already laid out the priorities that will be set
and the interventions that will be implemented
from January 1, 2014.
Greece enjoys a double advantage during its
presidency. First, Greece’s performance and
prospects will draw the interest of investors from
all over the world and, second, our country will
have the chance to promote certain priorities that
can attract the interest of foreign funds or can pro-
vide the basis for making demands on issues of
