Greek Exports Resist
The top-10 categories of Greek exports to EU countries
Despite the extremely harsh conditions prevailing in international
trade and in the domestic market, Greek exports seem to resist.
Although they declined, they retain their growth momentum on a
year-on-year basis. According to analysis by the Panhellenic
Exporters Association and the Export Research Center (KEEM) on
the estimates made by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT),
in September 2013 the total value of exports decreased by 2.3% (to
2.39 billion euros from 2.44 billion euros in September 2012).
Similarly, excluding petroleum products, exports were reduced by
1.5% (to 1.35 billion euros from 1.37 billion euros in September
2012). As a result of these pressures, the year-on-year export growth
rate for the period October 2012-September 2013 fell to single digits
(+9.5%). It is worth noting that the 2.3% drop in exports in
September 2013 is mainly attributed to the reduction of exports to
Third Countries (-11.3%), which principally concerns petroleum
products. That said, excluding petroleum products, Greek exports to
Third Countries rose by 2%.
