hotel complexes and resorts are either equipped
with the infrastructure required for supporting var-
ious sports or implement the investments
required for acquiring it. Moreover:
the promotion of the country’s potential in this
field, as well as the promotion of certain destina-
tions that are already capable of satisfying the
visitor’s desire for sports tourism, is becoming
more methodical;
advertising campaigns in the Russian and
Western European markets have intensified, with
the aim of promoting Greek ski resorts
(Kaimaktsalan, Parnassus, Kalavryta, Vasilitsa on
Mt Pindos, Seli, 3-5 Pigadia) and golf courses,
which keep increasing (Athens [Glyfada], Corfu,
Rhodes, Khalkidhiki, Messinia, Crete etc.), while
concerted efforts are made to acquaint tourists
with the climbing courses of Kalymnos (fully com-
plying with international standards), the extreme-
ly favourable wind- and kite-surfing weather con-
ditions in Rhodes, Naxos and Lefkas etc.
a series of diving parks have been planned, with
the aim of further developing diving tourism, a
great source of interest due to the existence of
many shipwrecks in Greek seas;
Finally, Greece will create a special Information
Bank, designed to provide tourists with electronic
information about the country’s tourist centres
that also offer recreational sport tourism services.
Tourism is one of the Greek’s economy’s main
hopes for recovery.
To this end, a new tourism
recovery model was adopted, focused on the bet-
ter protection and promotion of Greece’s environ-
ment and cultural heritage.
The improved cooperation between the govern-
ment and the business world has generated rea-
sonable expectations that this new model will
soon start bearing fruit, to the benefit of the entire
economy.
