Greece has naturally been most severely hit as a
country of entry with a major geostrategic role,
and is currently facing extreme difficulties, as tens
of thousands migrants and refugees remain
marooned all over the country.
Progress
“The past months,” explains Mr. Avramopoulos,
“have seen progress on both relocation and
resettlement.” However, “for our efforts to match
the scale of the challenge in both the EU frontline
Member States as well as our neighbourhood,
In crucial times like these we should not give
in to the voices of intolerance, exclusion or
isolation. Today, Europe risks losing its
vigour, its sense of direction. This is why we must
remember our shared past, in order to be remind-
ed of our shared destiny. The only way forward is
together,” he unequivocally declares. In the past
two years, Europe has been severely tested by
unprecedented migration flows and fundamental-
ist terrorism, which dealt a serious blow to the
European edifice, its political cohesion, and its
human-value based social reference framework.

Dimitris Avramopoulos:
The relocation and resettlement of
immigrants and refugees, security,
tackling terrorism and its radicalised
forms that emerged in the past few
years among second-generation
migrants and, above all, Europe’s return
to the principles and values on which European inte-
gration has traditionally been based on: these are the
necessary conditions for preserving the EU, according
to Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner for
Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship.

able to address the

successfully if we all
work together”
