ing with common problems, and also highlight
Greece’s role in more specialized matters.
A priority that will be promoted on the European
level is the need for sufficiently funded growth
that will create new jobs and enhance social
cohesion. The first axis will focus on Europe’s
need to reconsider its competitiveness and its
growth model. The message is: no to a jobless
growth. The aim of Athens is to promote commu-
nity documents and initiatives that will be also
linked to Greece’s needs. Of key importance for
Greece is the implementation of the Compact for
Growth and Jobs. The realization of the Compact,
which was adopted by the European Council of
June 2012, will be a priority for the first half of 2014.
The aim of the Greek side is to turn the Compact
into the basis for a realistic framework for growth,
employment and the promotion of investment.
This includes the huge problem of liquidity and
credit to small and medium-sized enterprises, as
well as youth unemployment, and especially the
programmes for containing unemployment and
the uses of community funds.
The second priority is to promote and deepen the
institutions of economic governance in the euro
zone and the EU. This in order to let all European
citizens know that their savings are secure and to
avoid creating inequalities due to differences in the
cost of money and in the cost of doing business,
which aggravate inequality and asymmetric growth
phenomena within the EU. To a great extent, these
issues are the responsibility of the ECOFIN.
