European history as a
caleidoscopic chamber-circus
A text about the tamed beast called “the
European”. Having won the coveted Molière Prize
in 2010, the play shook French audiences when
Peter Brook invited Pommerat to stage it at
Paris’s famous Bouffes du Norde theatre.
Everyday European tableaux from the Middle
Ages to the present, starring simple folk and
knights, servants and masters, lovers and family
men, all share a socio-political critique and meta-
physical gaze, cutting humour, as well as sus-
pense.
Pommerat’s gaze is fixed on the devaluation of
Europe’s great cultural heritage: humanism. The
Kanigunda company stages this work as a bizarre
chamber circus, and asks: How much humanism
has been left in this amoral Europe of capital mar-
kets? Consumption? Auschwitz? The poverty and
deprivation of our metropolises? The rise and fall
of the euro? Eight actors play more than forty
roles in an on-stage dream-fantasy played out to
music by Ligeti.

The sounds of Vivaldi, Handel and Corelli are
transformed into new music by G. Kouroupos,
N. Athineos, M. Moysidis and Ch. Gogios
Concerti and concerti grossi by Handel, Vivaldi
and Corelli inspire new creations, which are pre-
sented for the first time in the world by four lead-
ing Greek composers, Giorgos Kouroupos, Nikos
Athineos, Markos Moysidis and Charalambos
Gogios, especially for the Camerata on period
instruments and the Onassis Cultural Centre.
