ter enforcement and protection of passengers,
while seeking to limit noise in all EU airports to the
benefit of the citizens and the environment.
With regard to Intermodal Transport, we will start
negotiations with the European Parliament on the
deployment of alternative fuel markets and infra-
structures, with the aim of breaking the oil depend-
ence of transport and laying down minimum
requirements for alternative fuel infrastructure
build-up and common technical specifications.
Moreover, the Greek Presidency will address cur-
rent issues of general transport policy, i.e. the
Commission’s proposals on urban mobility.
In the Telecommunications Sector the Hellenic
presidency gives top priority to the promotion of
the electronic identification, the electronic identity
verification and the electronic signatures in the
internal market. We intend to help create an inte-
grated cross-border and cross-section legal
framework in the EU in regard to safe, reliable
and user-friendly electronic transactions, bridging
the existing gap in the standing EU law context,
which concerns electronic signatures only.
Equally high on the list of priorities of the Hellenic
presidency in the Telecommunications sector is the
European Strategy on an Open, Safe and Secure
Cyberspace, as well as ensuring a common high-
level Network and Information Security in the
European Union. This means improving network
security, security in public and private networks, as
well as security in information systems.
Moreover, the Hellenic presidency will seek,
through legislation on the reduction of network
deployment costs –which is expected to fall by
25%– to increase, at the same time, the effec-
tiveness of high-speed broadband network
deployment. This action will contribute to the
establishment of a single EU market.
On satellite issues, in order to respond to the
increased interest of EU member states in securi-
ty, the Hellenic presidency will promote the adop-
tion of an amended Regulation establishing an
Agency for European Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS) (GALILEO) and international
cooperation on satellite navigation systems.
Aiming to better serve people with disabilities and
the elderly, the Hellenic presidency will promote
the adoption of a framework of principles and
techniques for the accessibility of public sector
web pages, so that their content becomes accessi-
ble and available to all EU citizens-users – without
exception.
The Hellenic presidency will continue the work of
the Lithuanian one on the creation of a single tele-
coms market, striving to promote the legislative
initiative mentioned above, taking into considera-
tion its nature of “legislative package”, the appli-
cation of which will change the map of
Telecommunications throughout the EU.
