ncreasingly more Greek entrepreneurs are
open to cooperation with foreign partners,
which offers these partners new possibilities
for successfully entering the Greek market.
Greece has quite some potential, with a number
of promising sectors offering excellent possibili-
ties for entrepreneurs from the Netherlands and
other European countries. I would like to mention
a few.
Sustainable energy
Sustainable energy plays an important role in the
development of the Greek economy. Green ener-
gy generation is high on the agenda. Apart from
solar and wind energy, geothermal energy (inter-
nal heat of the earth) –which can be found any-
where in Greece– receives well-deserved atten-
tion. Greece wants to multiply its energy genera-
tion by a factor of ten before 2020, and to be able
to supply electricity to the rest of Europe within
the foreseeable future.
Waste Management
Energy from sustainable sources –which includes
energy from waste– has generated quite some
interest over the last few years. Strictly speaking,
waste management in all its different forms is still
in its infancy in Greece. Both the government and
private companies that provide waste manage-
ment services need the expertise of enterprises
from abroad. Therefore, investment possibilities
in the waste management sector are enormous.
Recycling is a relatively new concept in Greece,
as well. With a view to the market potential, it
might be interesting to enter this market through
cooperation with local partners.
Food Industry
The food industry is a dynamic sector in Greece
and accounts for nearly a quarter of the turnover
and a quarter of employment. Several Dutch
companies are highly successful in this market. A
