Besides its infrastructure development and tech-
nology modernization, Greece retains a strong
agricultural sector, internationally recognised, that
barely serves domestic demand.
It is obvious that the current crisis situation has
had an impact on Greece’s foreign trade. The
majority of imports have suffered since 2008,
even though the situation has stabilised after a
sharp drop in 2009 and subsequently the decline
has been much smoother. On the other hand, the
situation has led to a readjustment of the market
and the rehabilitation of several industries, which
have been able to grow, while others saw their
earnings decrease, or even had to close.
Although bilateral trade between our countries,
Greece and Spain, is still below desirable levels,
commercial exchanges have smoothly grown in
spite of the current economic crisis. On the
investment side, there are opportunities with
growing potential, particularly in infrastructure
and energy sectors, where Spanish firms are
strong.
The Chambers of Commerce and Industry have a
very important role to play in this scenario. Our
Institutions are key players in the recovery of our
countries and economies. Support to the busi-
ness community and contribution to the growth of
Spanish and Greek companies, providing quality
services in strategic fields of action such as inter-
nationalization, innovation and education will, no
doubt, be the focus all our efforts and resources.
These are changing times that we must endure
with the conviction that new opportunities will
emerge. Greece and Spain have challenging
futures ahead. Let’s turn these challenges into
opportunities.
