information about their cultivation, yields per
hectare etc.
Another major step that is worth mentioning is the
allocation of land to young farmers against a
token price since September 2011. Despite being
launched as a pilot programme in many parts of
the country, it soon became very popular.
According to the latest available data, 2,176 plots
of land have been posted for lease, and 3,596
applications have been submitted, of which 1,200
by unemployed persons, 1,123 by persons below
the age of 35, and 585 by holders of degrees in
geotechnical engineering.
One of the aims of this effort, and part of the
expectation of all the people that shift toward a
different way of life, based on cultivation and pro-
duction, is to overturn the status quo that kept

gramme for the setting up of young
farmers
The new trend, as recorded by the survey,
unfolds through the help of dormant –until recent-
ly– programmes that allow many Greeks to con-
template returning to the countryside and working
in agriculture, and not only that quarter of the
Greek population who, according to the survey,
have already taken actual steps for doing so.
In this context, the Ministry of Rural Development
and Food has announced that it will soon re-
launch the programme for the setting up of young
farmers, budgeted at a total of 60 million euros. It
will be capable of covering almost 6,000 farmers,
also providing for special assistance to the unem-
ployed, amounting to 10,000 euros per person.
