from Marathon to Athens, after which he was
arrested. On May 22nd of the same year, while
participating in an anti-war meeting in
Thessalonica, he fell victim of an assassination
attempt, was severely injured and died on
Monday, May 27, 1963.
It is a fact that in the last few decades the Marathon
Movement has grown substantially, exceeding its
narrow sportive limits. Today it boasts at least five
million runners, who travel all over the world in
order to participate in more than seven hundred offi-
cial international events per year, supported by
AIMS and the IAAF.
The Athens Classic Marathon, which covers an
admittedly tough route, aspires to prove once
again that it is rightly ranked among the top
events worldwide. It should be reminded that on
the same day, Sunday, November 11, 2012, at
9.00 am, the overall event comprises five runs, in
an effort to provide concrete support to the mass
participation of all those who have physical exer-
cise as a way of life.
More specifically:
•
the Classic Marathon Race, 42,195 m
•
the 10km Road Race
•
the 5km Road Race
•
a 1,000 m Road Race, with competitors from
Special Olympics Hellas, starting in front of the
Columns of the Olympian Zeus
•
a 700 m Children's Race.
It has to be noted that the organizers' took great
pains to ensure that the entire event imposes the
least possible burden on the environment, by
implementing a series of scheduled actions.
Registration to the 30th Athens Classic Marathon
started on March 11, 2012, via the event's official
website (www.athensclassicmarathon.gr).
So, we are waiting for you at the rendezvous of
culture, sports and environmental responsibility,
along a route that gazes history as part of global
heritage.
